Welcome to the first of my “daily rant” posts. I use that phrase, rant, as a tongue in cheek type thing as these are meant to be educational as well but they’re mostly just me venting my frustrations on the things I see that annoy or frustrate me in the current design world.
Today I’m talking ratings on design posts in Facebook Groups. If you’ve belonged to many of these groups over the past few years – you know the ones, there’s 36k members and no moderation. It’s like the Wild West of design posts.
On a daily basis I see someone post their design with the comment of “Rate this ?/10”. My knee jerk reaction is always just to comment with a 1 and leave it at that, forget about the post, hide notifications and move on.
My secondary thought is to comment that a rating does nothing to help them grow as a designer. What are they going to learn by a bunch of people commenting either with a number or possibly 👍🔥🔥🔥 – these comments are just as ridiculous as the request for a number.
If you’re posting to these pages and you’re serious about becoming a better designer ask for feedback. What could I do to make this better? How would you change this design? Give us some context as well; Who is the design for? What solution does it provide?
How do you go about getting feedback on your designs? Do you belong to any groups anywhere that you recommend joining? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
